Magic is real? Big deal. Bills still gotta be paid.
Especially when you’re heading into vet med. Emma Chase is nothing special – if anything, with a roomie who turns into a jaguar on a regular basis, she’s the sidekick, not the heroine. Her superpowers have more to do with acing her finals and overworking herself. Knowing her best friend’s secret makes it easier to justify her own inclination to keep people at a distance, but it doesn’t change her life.
Until others like him show up on her doorstep, convinced she’s the fated savior of their race, telling her she’s destined to command the magic of – well, Emma doesn’t quite catch that part, she’s too busy getting her ass the hell out of there.
What she does know? The Jaguar King is after her, his rivals want her dead, and she doesn’t have to believe in prophecy to believe they’ll stop at nothing to catch her.
Violence. Magic. Inappropriate humor. Step into a world of wonder and savagery in a gritty urban fantasy with an unlikely heroine, sizzling heroes, and complicated villains. The Jaguar King is a full-length read and the first in a series, and all the books have satisfying resolutions as well as a series-spanning story arc. Definitely no cliff-hangers – just bad-ass shifters with one goal claim the prize. Claim the Caller of the Blood.

I landed on the first book of this series when I saw some promo on twitter. The description seemed interesting so I purchased the book. The story caught my attention and interest in the first 2 chapters and so i continued reading it ( this is mandatory for me to continue reading). The plot of the story is very interesting with so many type of shifters and history. The various exotic locations covered in each part of the future books (there are total 4 out as of today) is just amazing. The author has done a lot of research in various local cultures, traditions, folk lore and myths. The heroin is Emma Chase, who took some time to embrace who she is which is totally acceptable as almost everyone is unaware of what her powers can and cant do. They just have a prophecy made thousands of years ago to go by. So she cant turn to anyone to get a complete answer for all of her questions as most of them only can ans a part of it or a theory or logic for something. but no conclusive ans.
So get yourself the entire series and binge read it and you wont regret. you will be like me desperately waiting for the 5th part to come out.

The Jaguar King The Wild Rites Saga Book 1 eBook Anna McIlwraith Reviews
Reasonably good. I enjoyed it. It could have used a slightly more thorough editor to tighten up the language, but overall it was fun. I especially enjoy the main character. She is just awesome. I love how she has such moxie. She also doesn't exhibit too-stupid-to-live syndrome. The thing she has against killing people will probably come back to bite her in the a** eventually. I want to be along for the ride to find out though!
I enjoyed this book but it was not what I was expecting, definitely not a romance. There is plenty of action, lots of magic, some displaced gods, some butt-kicking and a surprising amount of weapons, but no romance. I liked trying to figure out how the heroine, Emma 's, powers worked, and watching her get herself into and out of trouble. There were certainly an interesting group of friends surrounding her and keeping the storyline entertaining. The author does a good job of wrapping up the story, but leaving things open for the next book. There is some profanity and violence but no sexual scenes. I'm looking forward to reading the next book and seeing how Emma grows into herself and her power.
This was a free read and the premise intrigued me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it lived up to that premise. Well done, characters that caught my imagination is one reason I rated it so highly. The other is how well the plot flowed. I ended up reading it in one day long reading binge. There's a second book which I'm planning on purchasing, yet "The Jaguar King" stands alone quite nicely. I'm not much into shape-shifter novels, but this series promises to be one of the exceptions.
New urban fantasy author to add to my favorites list. Her name is Anna McIlwraith and the series I've been reading is The Wild Rites Saga, which spans the continents, includes an usual assortment of shape changers and an interesting take on vamps, several gods, and one very ordinary, marvelously magical, reluctantly heroic, human woman, named Emma. Just finished reading book four, and sadly will have to wait for book five to come out. The books are, in order The Jaguar King, The Jackal Prince, The Wolf's Heir, and The Serpent Priest. Loved them all. <3
The first chapter was prose heavy and overblown, but after the story started today unravel the writing calmed down. It was pretty much perfect after that first chapter. The world isn't unique but the inclusion of invertebrates and reptiles in the shapechanging world is almost unheard of. What is unique is how humans can be changed by shapechangers. It's shaping up to be like Anita Blake without the gratuitous sex.
Was a very different kind of shapeshifer story, kudos for originally. I enjoyed the story and the characters in this story, still not to sure where Bruce fits in but my guess is it will be explained further in the story at least I hope so. Interestingly we do not get a lot of background on the main character or what was the reason she is Cal!er of the Blood. Is it genetics, ancestry, what causes her to be this person of prophecy?
Here is a woman who knows where she is headed and has a plan to get there. She is working it. So few in the world take the time to find a profession they are suited to and will be happy working in it all their lives. Emma has found her spot. Life throws a curve ball and after that, it's all up for grabs! She rolls with the punches and grows as she listens to older and wiser heads. There was no sit down and enjoy a pity party. She stood up and took her knocks and figured a work-around. I love people like that. The plot was unique because I really could see a real life person having the same reactions. The actions and consequences were well thought out and the pace of the book was fast. Passing along sex scenes was not why this book was written, so if you are looking for that, find another book. If you want a book that captures your attention from page one and delivers great action, THIS IS YOUR BOOK. ) Don't expect a whiny heroine. She's not in this book. )
